SIP Calculator: Mutual Fund Returns

See what a monthly SIP or a lumpsum could grow to, plan a step-up SIP, or find the SIP you need for a goal such as ₹1 crore. Year-by-year growth, with inflation if you want it.

About SIP Calculator: Mutual Fund SIP & Lumpsum Returns

Four calculators in one. The SIP tab shows what a fixed monthly investment could grow to at the return you expect. The lumpsum tab does the same for a single investment. The step-up SIP tab raises the SIP by a percentage every year, the way most people invest as their salary grows, and shows how much more it builds than a flat SIP. The goal planner works backwards from a target, such as ₹1 crore for retirement or a child's education, to the monthly SIP or the one-time amount you would need. Each result has a chart and a year-by-year table, and can be shown in today's money for any inflation rate you choose.

How it works

  1. Choose SIP, lumpsum, step-up SIP or the goal planner.
  2. Enter the amount or target, the return you expect each year and the number of years.
  3. Read the amount invested, the estimated returns and the year-by-year growth.

For planning mutual fund investments, comparing a SIP with a lumpsum, and setting a monthly figure for a goal.

How SIP returns are calculated

A SIP (systematic investment plan) puts a fixed amount into a mutual fund every month. Each instalment buys units at that day's price and then compounds for the time it stays invested, so the early instalments do most of the growing.

The formula

FV = P × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i). P is the monthly amount, i is the expected yearly return ÷ 12 ÷ 100, and n is the number of months. For a lumpsum, FV = P × (1 + r ÷ 100)^years.

Examples at an assumed 12% a year

Reaching ₹1 crore

At 12% a year you need about ₹10,000 a month for 20 years, ₹19,800 for 15 years or ₹43,000 for 10 years. Starting earlier matters more than the amount: five extra years roughly halve the monthly SIP you need.

Returns are not guaranteed

Equity fund returns swing from year to year, and the long-run average can turn out lower than you assume. Try a cautious rate such as 8 to 10% as well, and remember the effect of inflation: at 6% inflation, ₹1 crore in 20 years buys what about ₹31 lakh buys today.

SIP रिटर्न कैसे निकालें

SIP में हर महीने एक तय रकम म्यूचुअल फंड में लगती है। FV = P × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i), जहाँ i = सालाना रिटर्न ÷ 12 ÷ 100।

Questions about SIP Calculator: Mutual Fund SIP & Lumpsum Returns

How is the SIP maturity amount calculated?

FV = P × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i), where P is the monthly SIP, i is the expected annual return divided by 12 and by 100, and n is the number of months. This assumes you invest at the start of every month.

What will ₹10,000 a month in SIP give in 20 years?

At an assumed 12% a year, about ₹1 crore (₹99.9 lakh) on ₹24 lakh invested.

How much SIP do I need for ₹1 crore?

At 12% a year, about ₹10,000 a month for 20 years, ₹19,800 a month for 15 years or ₹43,000 a month for 10 years.

Are SIP returns guaranteed?

No. Mutual fund returns depend on the market and change from year to year. The rate you enter is an assumption, so it is sensible to check a lower one too.

How are mutual fund gains taxed?

For equity funds, gains on units held over a year are long-term and taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh a year; gains within a year are taxed at 20%. Debt fund gains are added to your income.

Is what I type sent to a server?

No. SIP Calculator: Mutual Fund SIP & Lumpsum Returns runs as JavaScript inside your own browser tab. Nothing you type is transmitted, and it keeps working without internet once the page has loaded.
