Enter your salary and other income once and see your tax under both regimes side by side: standard deduction, taxable income, tax on each slab, the rebate, surcharge, cess, the total and the monthly figure. The new regime uses the slabs from 0% up to ₹4 lakh to 30% above ₹24 lakh, the ₹75,000 standard deduction and the rebate that makes income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free, with marginal relief just above it. For the old regime you can add HRA, 80C, 80D, home loan interest, NPS and professional tax, each capped at its limit, and the calculator tells you how large your deductions would need to be for the old regime to break even.
For salaried employees choosing a regime for TDS at the start of the year, and for anyone checking their tax before filing an ITR.

Your tax depends on your taxable income, which is your gross income minus the deductions your regime allows, and on the slab rates of the regime you choose. The new regime is the default; salaried people can still pick the old one each year when they file their return.
Salaried people and pensioners get a ₹75,000 standard deduction. If taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less, a rebate of up to ₹60,000 wipes out the tax, so a salary of ₹12.75 lakh pays nothing. Most other deductions, such as 80C, HRA and home loan interest on a self-occupied house, are not allowed; the employer's NPS contribution is.
Nil up to ₹2.5 lakh (₹3 lakh from 60 to 79 years, ₹5 lakh at 80 and above), 5% up to ₹5 lakh, 20% from ₹5 to 10 lakh and 30% above ₹10 lakh. The standard deduction is ₹50,000 and the rebate makes taxable income up to ₹5 lakh tax-free. In return you can claim deductions: 80C up to ₹1.5 lakh, 80D for health insurance, HRA, home loan interest up to ₹2 lakh, ₹50,000 more for NPS and others.
All figures include the 4% cess. Use the salary slip generator to lay out the monthly pay and the rent receipt generator for an HRA claim.
A surcharge of 10% applies above ₹50 lakh of income, 15% above ₹1 crore and 25% above ₹2 crore (and 37% above ₹5 crore in the old regime only), with marginal relief at each step. A 4% health and education cess is then added to the tax and surcharge.
Under the new regime, yes. Resident individuals with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh get a rebate of up to ₹60,000, which cancels the tax. Salaried people also get the ₹75,000 standard deduction, so a salary up to ₹12.75 lakh pays nothing.
Nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% from ₹4 to 8 lakh, 10% from ₹8 to 12 lakh, 15% from ₹12 to 16 lakh, 20% from ₹16 to 20 lakh, 25% from ₹20 to 24 lakh and 30% above ₹24 lakh, plus 4% health and education cess. Budget 2026 left them unchanged.
Nil up to ₹2.5 lakh (₹3 lakh for 60 to 79, ₹5 lakh for 80 and above), 5% up to ₹5 lakh, 20% from ₹5 to 10 lakh and 30% above ₹10 lakh. Income up to ₹5 lakh is tax-free through the ₹12,500 rebate.
With only the standard deduction, the new regime is cheaper at every income. The old regime can come out ahead only when you claim large deductions such as HRA, 80C, 80D and home loan interest. The calculator shows exactly how large they would need to be.
If your taxable income is a little over ₹12 lakh, the tax cannot be more than the income above ₹12 lakh. At ₹12.25 lakh of taxable income the tax is ₹25,000 plus cess, not the ₹63,750 the slabs would give.
