A GSTIN is a 15-character number. Every part of it means something, which is why a typing mistake can be caught before you file a return or raise an invoice.
A correct check digit means the number was typed correctly. It does not mean the registration is active, or that it belongs to the business named on the invoice. Before you claim input tax credit on a large invoice, search the GSTIN on the official GST portal and compare the legal name. The full GST state code list is on its own page, and the GST calculator splits tax into CGST, SGST or IGST.
Two digits for the state code, the 10-character PAN, one character for the registration number, the letter Z by default, and a final check digit.
It confirms the number is correctly formed. To see whether it is active today, search it on the official GST portal.
