Password Protect a PDF

Lock a PDF with a password using AES-256 encryption, and choose whether it can be printed, copied or edited.

About Password Protect a PDF

Add a password to a PDF before you email or share it. DocBrisk encrypts it with AES-256, the strongest protection the PDF format supports, and lets you decide whether people who open it can print, copy text or edit it. The file is encrypted on your device.

How it works

  1. Add the PDF you want to protect.
  2. Type a password, and choose what people can do after opening it.
  3. Download the protected copy.

Use it for payslips, contracts, medical reports and statements you need to send by email or WhatsApp.

Questions about Password Protect a PDF

Will the protected PDF open on phones and in Adobe Reader?

Yes. AES-256 PDF encryption is supported by Adobe Reader, Chrome, Edge, macOS Preview and Android and iPhone PDF apps.

What happens if I forget the password?

The file cannot be opened. Nobody, including DocBrisk, can recover a lost PDF password, so keep it somewhere safe.

Can I stop people from copying or printing?

Yes. Untick Print or Copy text. Well-behaved PDF apps respect these limits, though they are weaker than the open password itself.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Password Protect a PDF runs as JavaScript inside your own browser tab. Your file is read from your device into browser memory and the result is saved back as a download, so nothing is transmitted.
